There is a particular kind of friction that comes from a messy desktop. It isn't dramatic. It's the half-second of scanning, the tiny decision about where to put a file, the tab you leave open because closing it would require deciding something. Multiply that by a hundred small moments and the cost becomes real.
Make the first move obvious
A clean desktop is not a personality trait. It's a designed environment. We keep exactly three things on ours: the project we're actively working on, a folder for things that need a decision, and nothing else. Everything that arrives gets a home within a day or gets deleted.
- One active project folder, named for the outcome rather than the client.
- One inbox folder for files that need a decision by Friday.
- One archive folder that is searchable and never browsed.
The second rule matters more than the first: the inbox must be emptied. A holding folder without a review ritual is just a slower kind of clutter.
A clean desk doesn't make you creative. It makes creativity cheaper to begin.— Mira Kovalenko
Tools should lower the cost, not add a ritual
This is why we believe cleaning software should preview, not promise. Cleaning software should show you the truth, let you decide, and finish in under a minute. The best cleaning routine is the one you actually repeat.
